Correctly formulated solution to ensure consistent mastitis testing. (Non-professional solutions can give varying results.) Generally testing requires 1 litre per 50 cows. Solution is added to the RMT paddle in at least the same amount as the milk. Ideally the solution is used from a squirt or pump bottle. RMT solution is non-toxic, but is coloured blue for easy identification. Coagulation of the milk sample indicates the presence of somatic cells in high concentration.

RMT testing has always been quite a tedious procedure either slowing up milking considerably, or requiring an extra hand in the shed. The X-Spurt paddle makes RMT testing a fast and efficient one-hand operation as the 300ml (10fl.oz) X-Spurt reagent reservoir is also the handle for the paddle. Milk is entered in the paddle chambers and the paddle tilted in the normal way to reduce the samples to the usual 3ml (0.1fl.oz). A quick squeeze of the X-Spurt handle then enters equal amounts of reagent at the same time to all four samples. Swirling the paddle mixes the samples for usual coagulation recognition. The bottle capacity is 300ml, enough to RMT test about 15 cows.

Gently mix this concentrate with clean cold water in a clean container to make ready-to-use mastitis test (RMT/CMT) solution. Mix 1-litre of concentrate with 4 litres of water for enough solution to test approximately 500 cows.
NB: Test will not function if mixed with very hard water. If in doubt, mix with rain water only.

The Draminski electronic mastitis tester is used by dairy farmers around the world. It is a well-proven and extremely reliable device indicating foremilk conductivity and consequent subclinical mastitis. The design is very convenient to use, with the test switch being located under the handle for effortless activation without changing your grip. Conductivity readings are displayed in a digital format on a large-screen LCD display, highly visible even in poorly lit dairies.
With Draminski, the higher the conductivity reading, the healthier the milk. Readings above 300 generally can be taken to indicate a healthy uninfected quarter, and under 250 to be suspected subclinical mastitis. But remember- no conductivity meter gives absolute readings of healthy or unhealthy quarters, or of cell counts. Readings can only be used as inter-quarter comparisons. Four quarters with low but consistent readings, may be perfectly normal and healthy. Watch out for different quarters.
If the variation between quarters is greater than about 50, then care should be taken to either treat the quarter or to at least monitor it to identify any deterioration.

This latest development from Draminski has obvious benefits. There is no need to remember the sequential quarter readings. They are all right there. There is no question about identifying the affected quarter. After reading just shake out the samples and go on to the next cow.

Mas-D-Tec measures the levels of sodium and chloride in the milk. These are increased by bacterial infections. As levels rise, milk quality is lower and production will be reduced.
A small sample of quarter milk is squirted into the funnel top. Within two seconds the milk conductivity is analysed and indicated on the graphic scale. The milk drains through the Mas-D-Tec as the readings are taken. There is no need to tip the milk out. Simply continue to the next quarter and add more milk. The instrument detects the new sample and provides a new reading.
There is no need to wash the Mas-D-Tec between quarters and cows. Washing at the end of milking is all that is required. Mas-D-Tec is so fast to use that it is possible to test the whole herd during milking.
Mas-D-Tec should be used after herd tests to determine the quarter giving a cow’s sample a high cell count, or used strategically when bulk milk cell counts are rising. Badly infected quarters may give milk with perfectly good appearance, but have cell counts in the millions. Often the only way to find these infected quarters is by conductivity testing the whole herd.

Note: Mas-D-Tec uses a scale marked Normal and Abnormal. These classifications are entirely arbitrary. Any milk conductivity can be judged only on its relationship to adjacent quarters.

Quick and simple four-spot testing papers for quarter excessive cell counts. An infection causes a change in acidity in the quarter’s milk. A couple of drops of milk on the paper from an infected quarter will change the spot colour from yellow to green, or blue/green. Normal quarter milk will not affect the spots. Papers should be kept sealed in the bag until used. All four quarters should be tested simultaneously. This test is particularly useful at the start and end of the season when the RMT test is less reliable. Papers should indicate recovery 3-4 days after treatment is completed.

For routine management of mastitis squirt first stream samples into cup. Clots will show up immediately and clearly on the black-coloured mesh screen. Dispose of contents into drain when cup starts filling. This procedure is more hygienic than squirting potentially infected milk onto concrete floors.
